About the Role


As a Principal Data Scientist, you will be part of technical leadership team supporting Digital Factory projects that fundamentally change BHP’s performance across safety, productivity and people performance. The Digital Factory is BHP’s approach to rapid design and development of digital products (software-focused, minimal or no hardware) to unlock BMA’s digital potentials by embracing agile principles and team agility
At Principal level, we are looking for an experienced data scientist can drive a maturity vision on productionising delivery of cloud based data science work aligned to software engineering best practices. This role would be critical in bringing together a cohort of Data Scientists in the Digital Factory for driving maturity as well as capability uplift.



The key differentiator between a Specialist and Principal is the degree to which the individual is self-governed, prior experience in the role, ability to drive maturity in MLOps and software engineering best practices related to data science work, along with mentoring and coaching abilities.



A Data Scientist’s responsibility is to apply strong expertise in machine-learning, data mining, and information retrieval to design, prototype, and build the next-generation analytics engines and services that solve the Asset’s operational challenges. The Data Scientist is accountable for the quality of the models and their overall outputs as part of the broader digital solution development team.


When working on an initiative a Data Scientist will be able to:


  • Understanding business problems and designing end-to-end analytics use cases.
  • Developing complex models and algorithms that drive innovation throughout the organization. This may include improving on-time performance, network planning, etc.,
  • Conducting advanced statistical analysis to provide actionable insights, identify trends, and measure performance.
  • Collaborating with model developers to implement and deploy scalable solutions
  • Collaborating with product software teams to ensure model functionality using cloud solutions and monitoring the quality and effectiveness of the models in operations.
  • Providing thought leadership by researching best practices, conducting experiments, and collaborating with industry leaders

About You


  • Experience in driving digital maturity of Data Science engines built in cloud native environment (AWS preferred) where they have been able to drive MLOps and software engineering practice for the engine’s code to work with native built applications.
  • Deep knowledge of machine learning, predictive, statistics, optimization or related field as evident through a tertiary higher education degree (masters or PHD) and\or several years of industry experience.
  • Experience working with large data sets, simulation/ optimization and distributed computing tools
  • Experience in working with large datasets, relational databases (SQL), and distributed systems.
  • Experience Proficiency in R, Python, C#, Dockers, Spark, Git concepts.
  • Advanced knowledge of statistical techniques, data mining, machine learning (regression, decision trees, clustering, random forests, generalized linear models, etc.)
  • Excellent scientific computing skills, including creativity in the design and development of efficient algorithms.
  • Experience or interest in formulating communities to drive success and capability uplifts.
  • Ability to communicate technical contents to non-technical audience.
